सुखार्थिनः कुतोविद्या नास्ति विद्यार्थिनः सुखम् ।
सुखार्थी वा त्यजेद् विद्यां विद्यार्थी वा त्यजेत् सुखम् ॥जिसे सुख की अभिलाषा हो (कष्ट उठाना न हो) उसे विद्या कहाँ से ? और विद्यार्थी को सुख कहाँ से ? सुख की ईच्छा रखनेवाले को विद्या की आशा छोडनी चाहिए, और विद्यार्थी को सुख की ।
How can one who desires happiness (does not want to suffer) get knowledge? And how can a student get happiness? A person who desires happiness should give up the hope of knowledge and a student should give up the hope of happiness.
न चोरहार्यं न च राजहार्यंन भ्रातृभाज्यं न च भारकारी ।
व्यये कृते वर्धते एव नित्यं विद्याधनं सर्वधन प्रधानम् ॥विद्यारुपी धन को कोई चुरा नहीं सकता, राजा ले नहीं सकता, भाईयों में उसका भाग नहीं होता, उसका भार नहीं लगता, (और) खर्च करने से बढता है । सचमुच, विद्यारुप धन सर्वश्रेष्ठ है ।
No one can steal the wealth of knowledge, no king can take it, it is not divided among brothers, it is not a burden, (and) it increases when spent. Indeed, the wealth of knowledge is the best.
नास्ति विद्यासमो बन्धुर्नास्ति विद्यासमः सुहृत् ।
नास्ति विद्यासमं वित्तं नास्ति विद्यासमं सुखम् ॥विद्या जैसा बंधु नहीं, विद्या जैसा मित्र नहीं, (और) विद्या जैसा अन्य कोई धन या सुख नहीं ।
There is no friend like knowledge, there is no friend like knowledge, (and) there is no other wealth or happiness like knowledge.
ज्ञातिभि र्वण्टयते नैव चोरेणापि न नीयते ।
दाने नैव क्षयं याति विद्यारत्नं महाधनम् ॥यह विद्यारुपी रत्न महान धन है, जिसका वितरण ज्ञातिजनों द्वारा हो नहीं सकता, जिसे चोर ले जा नहीं सकते, और जिसका दान करने से क्षय नहीं होता ।
This gem of knowledge is a great wealth which cannot be distributed by the known people, which cannot be taken away by thieves, and which does not get wasted by donating it.
सर्वद्रव्येषु विद्यैव द्रव्यमाहुरनुत्तमम् ।
अहार्यत्वादनर्ध्यत्वादक्षयत्वाच्च सर्वदा ॥सब द्रव्यों में विद्यारुपी द्रव्य सर्वोत्तम है, क्यों कि वह किसी से हरा नहीं जा सकता; उसका मूल्य नहीं हो सकता, और उसका कभी नाश नहीं होता ।

विद्या भोगकरी यशः सुखकरी विद्या गुरूणां गुरुः ।
विद्या बन्धुजनो विदेशगमने विद्या परं दैवतम्
विद्या राजसु पूज्यते न हि धनं विद्याविहीनः पशुः ॥विद्या इन्सान का विशिष्ट रुप है, गुप्त धन है । वह भोग देनेवाली, यशदात्री, और सुखकारक है । विद्या गुरुओं का गुरु है, विदेश में वह इन्सान की बंधु है । विद्या बडी देवता है; राजाओं में विद्या की पूजा होती है, धन की नहीं । इसलिए विद्याविहीन पशु हि है ।

विद्या प्रधानं धनम् अस्ति । पुण्यं, पापम् इति ज्ञानं विद्यया एव भवति । स्वकर्तव्यज्ञानम् अपि विद्यया एव भवति । विद्या मनुष्याय विनयं ददाति । विनयात् मानवः पात्रतां याति। पात्रत्वात् च मनुष्यः धनं प्राप्नोति । विद्या मनुष्यस्य सुन्दरं रूपम् अस्ति । विद्यारहितः पुरुषः साक्षात् पशुः एव भवति । विद्या दानेन वर्धते संचयेन च नश्यति । अतः विद्या अपूर्वं श्रेष्ठं च धनम् अस्ति ।
हिंदी अर्थ :
विद्या ही प्रधान धन है। ज्ञान से ही पुण्य और पाप का ज्ञान होता है। ज्ञान से भी अपने कर्तव्य का ज्ञान होता है। ज्ञान व्यक्ति को विनम्रता देता है। नम्रता से मनुष्य योग्य बनता है। और योग्य होने के कारण व्यक्ति को धन की प्राप्ति होती है। ज्ञान मनुष्य का सुंदर रूप है। बिना ज्ञान वाला मनुष्य प्रत्यक्ष पशु है। ज्ञान देने से बढ़ता है और संग्रह करने से नष्ट होता है। इसलिए ज्ञान एक अभूतपूर्व और श्रेष्ठ धन है।
